Hats, Preschool Storytime, 1/22 & 1/23/2014

Begin by singing Raffi’s “Shake My Sillies Out” (Country Version).

Book – The Magic Hat by Mem Fox; illustrated by Tricia Tusa. (We used
puppets and a magic hat prop to tell this story, along with the actual book.)

Poem – “Hat Trick” by Deanna Romriell.

Magic! Magic! In my hat,
I’ll pull out a rabbit –
Aaaaaa!! What is that?!!
(Pull anything other than a rabbit out and repeat.)

Magic! Magic! In my hat,
I’ll pull out a rabbit –
See!! Look at that!!

Book – I Want My Hat Back by Jon Klassen.

Poem – “Hat,” from the Shel Silverstein book, Where the Sidewalk Ends.
(We used a toilet plunger for this one.)

Song – “The Pirate Song,” from the cd, H.U.M. All Year Long.

Book – Twelve Hats for Lena: A Book of Months by Karen Katz. (We used
magnetic pictures along with the actual book.)

Poem – “Santa’s Hat”.

Santa Claus with his beard of white,
Comes down the chimney on Christmas Eve night.
I know it’s Santa, I am sure of that.
Because he wears his ________________.
(Repeat while trying on various hats until you find the right one.)

Book – A Girl and Her Gator by Sean Bryan; illustrated by Tom Murphy.

Activity – We let the children try on various hats while looking at
themselves in the mirror and getting their pictures taken next to Woody (who, himself, was wearing a hat). We also listened to the song, “I Love My Little Hat,” from the cd, Wiggleworms Love You.

Bears, Preschool Storytime, January 29th & 30th, 2014



Dustin and I entered the Story Room dressed as lumberjacks and singing “Heigh-ho, Heigh-ho, it’s home from work we go.” 

Begin by singing Raffi’s “Shake My Sillies Out” (w/ lumberjack moves).
BookBig Bear Hug by Nicholas Oldland.

Song – “The Bears on the Bus.”  (We used bear puppets to help with this
song.)

The bears on the bus go roar, roar, roar,
Roar, roar, roar, roar, roar, roar.
The bears on the bus go roar, roar, roar,
All through the town.
* * * * *
The bears on the bus take a nap . . .
                The bears on the bus eat some honey . . .
The bears on the bus hide from bees . . .
                The bears on the bus claw the chairs . . .
The people on the bus go ahhh, ahhh, ahhh!

BookBear in Underwear by Todd H. Doodler.  (We used a bear puppet and
an assortment of underpants, along with the actual book.)

Activity/StoryWe’re Going on a Bear Hunt by Michael Rosen & Helen
Oxenbury.  (We had the kids do the actions with us in place of reading the book.)

BookThe Little Mouse, the Red Ripe Strawberry, and the Big Hungry Bear
by Don & Audrey Wood. 

Song – “Five Bears in the Bed.” (I have a bed prop which can be used along
with the song.)

Five bears in the bed and the little one said,
“Roll over, I’m crowded.”
So they all rolled over, and one fell out.

Four bears in the bed, and the little one said,
“Roll over, I’m crowded.”
So they all rolled over and one fell out.

Three bears in the bed, and the little one said,
“Roll over, I’m crowded.”
So they all rolled over and one fell out.

Two bears in the bed, and the little one said,
“Roll over, I’m crowded.”
So they all rolled over and one fell out.

One bear in the bed, and the little one said,
“I’m lonely, come back.” 

Activity/Song – Bear hats and song.  We made bear hats for each of the kids
and then had them do the actions to the song, “Teddy Bear Teddy Bear,” from the compact disc, Songs from The Cozy Cottage.

New Books for a New Year! January 2nd, 2014

Begin by singing Raffi’s “Shake My Sillies Out.”

Book – Cheetah Can’t Lose by Bob Shea.

Song – “When Cats Get Up,” from the cd, Wiggleworms Love You. (We used various puppets to help act
out this song.)

Book – No! by Tracey Corderoy.

Song – “Wiggle Your Lah-De-Dah,” from the cd, All Around Ralph’s World. (We played with streamers
while we sang this song.)

Puppet Show – A Big Guy Took My Ball! by Mo Willems. (We performed this story using Patrick’s
Elephant and Piggie stuffed animals along with a poster board picture of a whale.)

Song – “I’m a Big Whale . . . and Other Animals.” (We used a number of puppets while we sang this
song.)

Final Activity – “Let’s Make Some Noise,” from the Raffi cd, Everything Grows. (We used instruments
and let the kids dance around the room.)

Gingerbread Jamboree, 2013

Begin by singing Raffi’s “Shake My Sillies Out”

Book – Who Ate All the Cookie Dough by Karen Beaumont.


Rhyme – “Making Cookies Chant,” by Jean Warren. (See attached.)

Book – If You Give a Mouse a Cookie by Laura Numeroff; illustrated by
Felicia Bond. (Deanna has some great little props which she used to tell the story, in place of the actual book.)

Song – “C is for Cookie,” from any number of Sesame Street cds. (We gave
each child a die-cut “C” to hold up while they sang this song. Also, we used my giant Cookie Monster puppet along with some magnetic pictures and the dry-erase board.)

Book – The Duckling Gets a Cookie by Mo Willems. (Deanna and I wore
Pigeon and Duckling headbands while we read this book.)

Activity – “Hello, My Name Is Joe.” (We modified the pizza version of this
story to make it work for our cookie theme. Lots o’ fun!) (See attached.)

Puppet Show – “The Gingerbread Man.” (See attached.)

Final Activity – We had the children follow the Gingerbread Man’s
footprints to the Craft Room where they got to decorate their own gingerbread cookies from Harmons!

Space, Sunday Storytime.

Final Activity: Blast Off! by Cynthia Holley.


            Jump into your spacesuit,
            Don’t forget your hat. (Imitate putting on suit and helmet.)
            Climb into the rocket ship
            On the launching mat.  (Climb in, sit down.)
            Buckle up for take off,
            Belts from head to toe.  (Buckle up!)
            Countdown from ten and blast off,
            Up to the moon we go!
            10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 . . . . Blast off!

We then landed on the moon and did various activities such as space walking, jumping, and running.  Afterward we decided to return to earth and did the rhyme a second time, substituting the words “Back to the earth” in place of “Up to the moon.”

Begin by singing Raffi’s “Shake My Sillies Out”

Book: To Market, to Market by Anne Miranda.

Poem: Me Stew by Shel Silverstein.

Book: Chicken Soup with Rice by Maurice Sendak, accompanied by the song of the same name from Carole King’s Really Rosie.

Song: Hot Potato from The Best of the Wiggles.

Story: Gertrude’s Mosquito Soup (Robin has this one).
 
Song: I Feel Crazy So I Jump in the Soup from Victor Vito by Laurie Berkner.

Book: Soup for One by Ethan Long

Final Activity: Alphabet Soup on the parachute. We put a bunch of letter shapes on the parachute and sang the alphabet song.
